De Harley-Davidson Motor Company werd opgericht in 1903. Het werd een naamloze vennootschap, Harley-Davidson, Inc., in 1981 na een management buy-out. In 1986 kreeg het bedrijf een beursnotering en de aandelen staan nog steeds genoteerd aan de New York Stock Exchange.

Het bedrijf fabriceert motorfietsen en ze hebben een verbrandingsmotor met een cilinderinhoud van tenminste 601 cc en minder dan 1900 cc. Het produceert en verkoopt zo’n 250.000 motorfietsen op jaarbasis, waarvan 60% in de Verenigde Staten.Dit land en Europa zijn de belangrijkste afzetgebieden, hier wordt driekwart van de totale omzet gerealiseerd. Andere belangrijke afzetlanden zijn Australië, Japan en Canada. In de VS heeft het ongeveer de helft van de markt voor dit soort motorfietsen in handen, in Europa ligt het marktaandeel rond de 10%. Wereldwijd zijn er 1500 dealers actief. Per 31 december 2017 waren er 5200 medewerkers in dienst.

De activiteiten zijn verdeeld over twee bedrijfsonderdelen, motorfietsen, inclusief onderdelen, en een financieringsafdeling, Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS). HDFS is het kleinste onderdeel met een bijdrage aan de totale omzet van zo’n 15%. De winstmarge ligt hoger en de bijdrage aan de nettowinst was ongeveer 25% in 2016 en 2017.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company was founded in 1903. It became a limited liability company, Harley-Davidson, Inc., in 1981 after a management buyout. The company was listed on the stock exchange in 1986 and its shares are still listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company manufactures motorcycles and they have an internal combustion engine with a displacement of at least 601 cc and less than 1900 cc. It produces and sells about 250,000 motorcycles on an annual basis, 60% of which in the United States. This country and Europe are the main markets, where three quarters of the total turnover is realized. Other important sales countries are Australia, Japan and Canada. In the US it has about half of the market for this type of motorcycle, in Europe the market share is around 10%. There are 1500 dealers active worldwide. As of December 31, 2017, there were 5,200 employees.

Its operations are divided into two business units, Motorcycles, including parts, and a financing division, Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS). HDFS is the smallest part with a contribution to the total turnover of about 15%. The profit margin is higher and the contribution to the net profit was approximately 25% in 2016 and 2017.
